Dear Valued Customer,
As the world’s largest RAIN UHF RFID partner, Avery Dennison is pleased to announce the launch of two unique UHF RFID inlays designed for tagging metal products and liquids.
Our latest research indicates a growing number of retailers and manufacturers are striving to tag 100% of their inventory and are facing challenges with products that include metal or liquid. For example, tracking items, such as computer hardware, tools, and metal equipment is a challenge because the metal surface of the product to which the tag is applied reflects the signal from the reader. The same effect occurs when tagging products enclosed in metallic packaging, such as cosmetics with foil wrap, as well as canned food and beverages.
To address these challenges, Avery Dennison has developed two unique UHF RFID tags for tagging metal surfaces and liquids; AD-456u8 and AD-454r6-P.
AD-456u8 AD-456u8 is one of Avery Dennison’s first on-metal tag solutions for UHF RFID label applications. Equipped with NXP’s UCODE 8 IC, the 64 x 6mm match-stick style label is made to fit a variety of products, large or small. This new design is a unique foam tag solution which continues to radiate when applied to virtually any material, performing especially well on products with metal and liquid content, enabling the tag to reach read distances of up to three meters. The soft, pliable tag conforms well to curved surfaces and uses a highly durable and permanent adhesive that provides excellent adhesion to a wide variety of substrates. The print-friendly 2 mil White Polyester face stock provides excellent tear strength, heat resistance, and chemical resistance for applications where higher durability is needed.
AD-456u8 provides an optimal RFID tag solution for omnichannel retailers specializing in Health & Beauty, Food & Beverage, and many other markets where metallized packaging and liquid containers are prevalent. Depending on your location, AD-456u8 FCC and AD-456u8 ETSI formats are available to ensure you have the highest performing tag for your region.
Key features of AD-456u8 include:
- Two region-specific globally tuned designs available; 1) FCC version exhibits peak performance at 902 – 928 MHz and 2) ETSI version exhibits peak performance at 865 – 868 MHz
- NXP UCODE 8 Chip
- 2.52 x 0.236 in [64 x 6mm] form factor
- Memory profile 128-bits EPC
- 48 bit unique serialized TID number
- “Kill” and access password capabilities
- Flexible tag construction, with the ability to conform well to curved surfaces
- High performance on metal surfaces and on items containing liquid
AD-454r6-P
Some applications will require a higher level of performance than what AD-456u8 has to offer. In this case, consider testing AD-454r6-P FCC. This larger, more robust on-metal tag, measures 2.75” x .75” in size and due to its larger antenna size will allow the tag to read up to 5.5 meters on metal surfaces, and nearly the same distance on products containing liquid. With a similar construction to the AD-456u8, AD-454r6-P FCC is an excellent choice for industrial applications where environmental concerns are a factor or a longer read range is required. Although AD-454r6-P operates globally, the highest read distances will be achieved while operating in the FCC band.
Key features of AD-454r6-P include:
- Global performance (860 – 960 MHz) with peak performance in FCC region (902 – 928 MHz)
- Impinj Monza® R6-P Chip
- 2.75” x 0.75 in [70 x 19mm] form factor
- Memory profile [R6-P]: up to 128-bits EPC and up to 64-bits user memory [with chip configuration capability]
- 48 bit unique serialized TID number
- “Kill” and access password capabilities
- Flexible tag construction, with the ability to conform well to curved surfaces
- High performance on metal surfaces and items containing liquid
Both AD-456u8 and AD-454r6-P are available for purchase in a pressure sensitive label format. Please work directly with your preferred OEM for printer/encoder placement guidelines.
